Before You Plant

Sunlight for different fruits

Deciduous fruit trees (trees that lose their leaves annually) need almost six to eight hours of direct sunlight. This includes your fruit trees!

Apple, banana, cherry, fig and pear - 8 hours

Orange, lemon, grapes, peach, nectarine, plum and apricot - 6 hours

Paying attention to what’s around your trees

Avoid rocky areas that may retain and emit heat exhausting your trees. You should also avoid planting too close to brick or cinderblock walls.

Spacing for fruit trees

Apricots, Cherries, Nectarines, Peaches & Plumcots - plant these trees 10-15 feet away from each other.

Apples - plant these trees as little as 5 feet away from each other.

Digging Your Hole

You’ll want to dig a hole to plant your tree wide enough to comfortably accommodate the roots and deep enough for the bud union to be 2-3 inches above the soil line. Planting your tree too deep can cause it to lose the properties of the rootstock including dwarfing characteristics if it’s a dwarfing tree.
